Money exchange in Tibet

Renminbi (RMB) is the legal currency in Tibet as in the rest of China. Foreign exchange service facility is only given by the Bank of China or certain up market hotels (Lhasa Hotel, the former Holiday Inn, and Tibet Hotel). Lhasa has the main office and several branches of Bank of China which accepts major credi cards like MasterCard, Visa, Diners club, Amex. Bank of China’s main office is located on Lingkhor Bei Lu 28, north of the Yak Statue and opening hours are 9:30 am -1pm and 3:30 – 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Another convenient sub-branch is at Beijing Dong Lu, between the Kirey Hotel and the Banak Shol Hotel with opening hours of 9:30am-6:00pm, Monday to Friday, and 11am-3pm, Saturday and Sunday. The Bank of China Shigatse office is near the Shigatse Hotel where traveler’s cheque service is available but cash advances on credit cards service isn’t’ available here. Zhangmu has two sub-branches also.
