Upon arrival in Colombo, we shall meet/greet you at the airport then transfer to your hotel (Galle Face Hotel). The hotel is located at central Colombo along the seafront and facing the famous Galle Face Green. The hotel carries Sri Lanka’s rich history and legendry traditions. Travelers often say that visit to Sri Lanka is incomplete without staying at this majestic hotel. Originally built in 1864, the hotel is recently being restored to it’s original glory. Today discover Colombo on foot during the guided sightseeing tour round the city. During the tour, your guide will explain the city’s rich history dating back to the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonization periods. Walk through the fort, the central business district of Colombo. Visit the monumental building like the Grand Oriental Hotel or Cargills Department Store. Colombo is modernizing so only handful of it’s architectural gems remain. Walk through the crazy street of the Pettah Colombo’s main market hub with it’s modern open-air bazaars. Today visit the city of Kings and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura is unique city which was continuously inhabited for over two millennia. It’s a scared pilgrimage site where you will visit the sacred fig tree (Sri Maha Bodhi), said to have a branch, grown from the original Sri Maha Bodhi in India, from which the Buddha gained enlightenment. Then visit other highlights like dagobas (Buddhist stupas) that stand as majestic as they did during the reign of the Kings. Ritigal about 16 miles further surrounded by pathways opening into a thick jungle and scared meditation grounds. Walk to the ancient Buddhist monastery and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of this place. Or hike up to the higher grounds of Ritigala, the highest mountain in northern Sri Lanka. Continue sightseeing and today you will discover Sri Lanka’s jewel taking you back to time. Start-tour tour with Sigiriya Rock, the majestic rock fortress site also known as Lion Rock. Sigiriya was built by King Kashyapa with a mission to build a fortress so grand which can be reached by 1200 steps and offers birds’ eye-view of the leafy emerald meadows and village beneath. Today 20% of the structures that once graced the area are left on the top in ruins but still one of the best preserved ancient landmarks. Climbing up is strenuous but not hard and upon reaching the top, the reward is an unforgettable experience. The Lion Staircase and the Mirror Wall is additional highlights of this place. Then visit the ancient site of Pidurangala couple of miles north. It’s a massive rock configuration and believed to be the royal temple of King Kashvapa who built Sigiriya. Climbing up to Pidurangala is quite strenuous so wear comfortable shoes. From Pidurangala top will offer you spectacular vista and Sigiriya looming majestically in the distance. After breakfast, drive to Kandy from Dambulla which is about 3 hours. Kandy is popular for spices such as cinnamon, cloves, Nutmeg, cardamom, pepper and turmeric. The spice selection is top notch and with the help of your guide you can pay a fair price. For food lovers, you can visit the market at the Midlands Café which it’s classic loafs of bread severed alongside delicious curries and strong cup of Ceylon tea. You can also browse for wide range of exotic fruits, a local favorite is wood apple with it’s fermented smell mixed with tamarind. Also jack fruit, rambutan, mangosteen and many more, including impressive, fresh picked bananas. Check-in Hotel Elephant Stables. The hotel is actually a beautiful colonial period bungalow on a hill overlooking Kandy. It was the residence of Adigar Sir Cuda Ratwatte (1880-1950), a Ceylonese nobleman, and the first person from Kandy to be awarded a knighthood by the British.
