Originating in 1867 under the patronage of the 4th Desi Gyalse Tenzin Rabgay, this culturally significant festival underwent a transformative update in the 1950s by the visionary third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Thimphu Tshechu festival is scheduled for 13 to 15 September for this year i.e. 2024 in Bhutan.

Thimphu Tshechu is one of the grandest festivals in Bhutan. Thimphu tshechu in bhutan attracts the largest audience. Such festivals are the best way to experience the living culture of Bhutan. Thimphu tshechu is celebrated with performances by trained monks and laymen in amazing masks and costumes. Tsechu is a Buddhist festival in honor of Guru Rimpoche, the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. Thimphu tshechu Bhutan was started by the 4th Temporal Ruler, Tenzing Rabgye (1638-1696) in 1670. During the Thimphu tshechu festival, locals gathered in their finest Gho’s and Kira’s in a celebration of their culture and faith.

Thimphu Tshechu tour starts with spectacular flight over the Himalayas and towards the lush green valley of Paro then drive to the tiny capital city – Thimphu. The next three days are spent attending the Thimphu Tshechu and sightseeing around Thimphu. Afterwards, visit Punakha – the old capital and back to Paro for hike to the Taktsang Monastery ‘Tiger’s Nest’ outskirts of Paro town. Eventually end the Thimphu Tshechu Tour at Paro after unforgettable memories of the Dragon Kingdom.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Paro (2,250m) & transfer to Thimphu (2,350m)

Arrive at the Paro International Airport and after clearing your immigration formalities, we shall transfer you to Thimphu which is about an hours’ drive from Paro. Visit several locations in Thimphu like Buddha’s Point, Takin Preserve, Tashichoe Dzong, King’s Memorial Chorten, Centenary Market, the new authentic craft bazaar, Folk heritage museum etc. Overnight at Hotel in Thimphu. (Lunch/Dinner)

Day 2In Thimphu - attend the Thimphu Festival

After breakfast, attend the Thimphu festival at Tashi Chho Dzong where the whole day is spent in the festival with various mask dances and folk dancers along with jokers actions in the crowd. Later on, back to hotel. Overnight at Hotel in Thimphu. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Day 3Thimphu - Punakha (1,310m)

After breakfast, drive to Punakha which is about 3 hours drive. Ascending upwards, you will come across Dochula pass at 3,100 meters which commands great panorama of the eastern Himalayas in a clear day. Then descend downwards to Punakha Valley; reaching closer to Punakha, take a hike to Chimi Lhakhang. It’s located amid rice fields in a hilltop and is the temple of ‘Drukpa Kuenley’. The temple is also known as fertility temple and pilgrimage site for childless couples. Later on visit the impressive Punakha Dzong located at the confluence of Pho-chu (male-river) and Mo-chu (female-river. Afterwards, back to hotel. Overnight at Hotel in Punakha. Day 4Punakha - Paro (2,250m)

After early breakfast, drive from Punakha to Paro again re-crossing Dochula pass then further drive to Paro. In Paro visit Rinpung Dzong built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan The southern approach to the Dzong has a traditional roofed cantilever bridge called Nemi Zam. Later on, back to hotel. Overnight at Hotel in Paro.(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Day 5In Paro - Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (3,120m)

Early in the morning, drive to the base of the popular Taktsang Monastery ‘Tiger’s Nest’ and hike upwards. For a fit hiker, it will take 2 hours after when you will get dramatic view of the monastery. It’s believed the Guru Padmasambhava came here in a flying tigress and meditated here in the 8th century. Later on visit Kiychu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. Then back to Paro town for overnight stay. Overnight at Hotel in Paro. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Day 6Trip concludes & fly to onwards destination

Bid farewell to the Dragon Kingdom and we shall transfer you to the Paro International Airport to catch your onward flight. (Breakfast only)
